It hasn't been a great week for news, as we've lost another innovative artist on top of the passing of Satoshi Kon. Though Kihachiro Kawamoto won't be as familiar a name to most, his contributions are definitely of a similarly high caliber and impact.

As far as animation goes, Kawamoto worked on experimental projects like Shijin no Shougai and Winter Days, winning the Grand Prize in the Animation Division of the Japan Media Arts Festival Awards for the latter in 2003.

Even more famous was his work as puppet master, which included Sangokushi, the early '80s television adaptation of Romance of the Three Kingdoms. He also used puppets to adapt the Japanese war epic Heike Monogatari from 1993-1995.

Kawamoto passed on Monday due to pneumonia, at the age of 85.
