It's been a long time coming, and there have been many ups and downs as far as casting and, well, everything else goes, but thanks to a Variety report we now know that the live-action Akira has officially been green-lit by Warner Bros.
Production on the adaptation of Katsuhiro Otomo's manga is set to begin in late February or early March, and it's been established as having a budget of $90 million. Variety describes the film's current story:
"Set in New Manhattan, the cyberpunk sci-fi epic follows the leader of a biker gang who must save his friend, discovered with potentially destructive psychokinetic abilities, from government medical experiments."
After director Albert Hughes left the project in May due to creative differences, Warner Bros. hired Orphan director Jaume Collet-Serra to helm the film.
Other recent news on the adaptation has Tron Legacy's Garret Hedlund as a likely actor to fill the pill-poppin' shoes of protagonist Kaneda.

What do you think? Is there any chance Hollywood will get this right?

Pro: they'll have to make the bike
Con: Garret Hedlund screaming "TESTUOOOOOO" from a red biker outfit
Pro: Garret Hedlund getting bitch-slapped by a gym teacher
Con: After this much "translation", wouldn't it be more of a rip-off than a remake?

Considering where this version is taking place and who they may have lined up to act in it, hopefully they'll give some other name. Maybe it'll be called 'Alfred'?

Does anyone else think this should uh...take place in NEO-TOKYO with maybe a JAPANESE ACTOR?!?!

Has Hollywood gotten anything right (yes they have) with Live Action anime adaptations? All I want from this is the solid story, good acting, and an incredible production team that knows when something goes wrong before they showcase complete filth to the entire world. Please. Please be good.

As far as I know it's essentially on hold until Cameron gets his ya-yas out with the Avatar trilogy... so who knows! I wish it would hurry up, I want to see that more than another Avatar flick.
