children of the sea

When it comes to adapting a manga like Daisuke Igarashi’s award-winning Children of the Sea, you really need to come up with something special. It looks like Studio 4ºC has that covered, because the first teaser trailer is here with a brief but beautiful look at the feature.

In addition to seeing some stunning footage, you’ll get a chance to hear some of the soundtrack by Joe Hisaishi, known for his work on the films of Takeshi Kitano and Hayao Miyazaki, among others. Ayumu Watanabe (Gurazeni) directs, with Kenichi Konishi (Tokyo Godfathers) on character designs and chief animation direction.

Voice cast members include Mana Ashida as Ruka, Hiiro Ishibashi as Sora, and Airu Kubozuka as Umi.

Viz Media publishes the manga in English and describes it like so:

When Ruka was younger, she saw a ghost in the water at the aquarium where her dad works. Now she feels drawn toward the aquarium and the two mysterious boys she meets there, Umi and Sora. They were raised by dugongs and hear the same strange calls from the sea as she does. Ruka’s dad and the other adults who work at the aquarium are only distantly aware of what the children are experiencing as they get caught up in the mystery of the worldwide disappearance of the oceans’ fish.
