End of an Era: Bye Bye, Laserdisc

Pioneer made an announcement yesterday that they would finally be shutting down production of Laserdisc players after 27 years. Many hardcore anime enthusiasts of old flocked to the format because of its ability to feature audio tracks in multiple languages way before this was a commonplace option of the DVD era. Also, it just plain looks better than those cruddy VHS tapes.

The bigger shocker here, to me at least, is that Pioneer was still producing Laserdisc players. That may be because I never owned one myself, but I did appreciate the way that LD collectors always had this really cool looking vinyl-sized collection of media, including a lot of anime that was formative to my interest in general.

So if you have one of these bad mamma-jammas sitting around the house, do yourself a solid and give your favorite LD a spin for old time’s sake. Make it Tenchi Muyo or something, because that’s always what comes to mind when I think of Pioneer anyway.
