GKIDS Licenses Studio Ponoc’s Modest Heroes Anthology Film

GKIDS Licenses Studio Ponoc’s Modest Heroes Anthology FilmGee, kids: GKIDS is quickly earning a reputation as one of the best distributors of theatrical anime out there. This time, they’ve licensed the newest film from Studio Ponoc, Modest Heroes: Studio Ponoc Short Theatre, Volume 1, for American distribution.

The film will head to American theaters January 2019 in English and Japanese with English subtitles.

Modest Heroes, which was released in Japan this summer, is made up of three shorts produced by Ponoc, the folks behind Mary and The Witch’s Flower. The three shorts, each of which center around the theme “modest heroes,” are titled “Kanini & Kanino,” “Life Ain’t Gonna Lose” and “Invisible.”

GKIDS announced that Maggie Q (Designated Survivor, Divergent) will be playing a role (ostensibly the mother) in “Life Ain’t Gonna Lose,” which centers around the relationship between a mother and son with serious egg allergies.

“Like everyone who fell in love with Mary and The Witch’s Flower, we couldn’t wait to see what Studio Ponoc would do next,” said GKIDS president David Jesteadt. “We are thrilled that they returned with not one but three new stories, and we are honored to continue our partnership with one of the most innovative and exciting animation studios working today.”

Modest Heroes will premiere at the Animation is Film festival in Los Angeles this month.
