Live-Action Bleach Film’s Rukia, Release Date Announced

The live-action adaptation of Tite Kubo’s Bleach is on its way. The film, which has been in the works for a few years now, finally has a release date—and we’ve also learned who will play Rukia Kuchiki.

Rukia will be played by Hana Sugisaki, who has appeared on-screen as Rin Asano in Blade of the Immortal and as a voice actress in Mary and the Witch’s Flower (Mary) and When Marnie Was There (Sayaka).

Sugisaki joins Sota Fukushi (Library Wars), who plays Ichigo Kurosaki. The film opens July 20.

It’s directed by Shinsuke Sato, who has helmed many manga adaptations, including Gantz, I Am A Hero and Death Note: Light Up the New World.

In case you’re under the impression Bleach is a manga about washing white clothing, here’s a synopsis courtesy Viz Media:

Ichigo Kurosaki has always been able to see ghosts, but this ability doesn’t change his life nearly as much as his close encounter with Rukia Kuchiki, a Soul Reaper and member of the mysterious Soul Society. While fighting a Hollow, an evil spirit that preys on humans who display psychic energy, Rukia attempts to lend Ichigo some of her powers so that he can save his family; but much to her surprise, Ichigo absorbs every last drop of her energy. Now a full-fledged Soul Reaper himself, Ichigo quickly learns that the world he inhabits is one full of dangerous spirits and, along with Rukia–who is slowly regaining her powers–it’s Ichigo’s job to protect the innocent from Hollows and help the spirits themselves find peace.
