Makoto Shinkai’s Your Name Has Huge Opening Weekend

It was a nice weekend for Makoto Shinkai.

Your Name (Kimi no na wa.), the latest film by Shinkai, the director behind 5 Centimeters Per Second and The Garden of Words, had a fine opening weekend at the Japanese box office, earning ¥770 million ($7.5 million) between Friday and Saturday.

Toho expects Your Name to take in as much as ¥6 billion, which would make the Shinkai film one of the highest-grossing non-Ghibli anime films ever. 590,000 people saw the film, which opened on 301 screens throughout the country, between Friday and Saturday.

Your Name, which premiered earlier this summer at Anime Expo in Los Angeles, is slated to open in 85 countries, and was licensed for distribution in the States by Funimation.

In response to the wide release, director Shinkai was quoted as saying he didn’t create the film with a global audience in mind, but that it would be great if people from all over the world enjoyed it.
