The Boy and the Beast Trailer, Cast Revealed

A new trailer and the voice cast for Mamoru Hosoda’s new film, The Boy and the Beast, have been revealed.

The film, which centers around a young orphan who finds his way into the world of beasts, will be the first film from Hosoda since 2012’s Wolf Children.

The beast of the title, named Kumatetsu, will be played by veteran actor Koji Yakusho. Yakusho is best-known in the west for his role in the film Shall We Dance? and his frequent collaborations with cult horror director Kiyoshi Kurosawa. This is his first major role in an anime film.

The titular boy, Kyuta, will be played by two actors for his child and adult periods. Child Kyuta will be played by Aoi Miyazaki, who previously starred in Hosoda’s Wolf Children as Hana. The adult Kyuta will be played by Shota Sometani, who’s currently starring in the live-action Parasyte films as well as the upcoming Bakuman.

The rest of the voice cast can be seen here.

Interestingly, all three of the actors are better-known for their live-action work than as voice actors. What do you think of this decision? And what do you think of the trailer?
