Trouble in Akihabara

There’s an image in a lot of people’s minds of Tokyo as an extremely safe place, where people don’t lock their doors or chain up their bikes. Now, compared to many cities in the west, Tokyo’s crime rate is pretty low indeed. But sadly, no city is entirely crime free, as a recent incident at a maid cafe in Akihabara proves.

On November 3rd, an unidentified maid cafe was robbed by a male vocational school student who, approaching the register as if to pay, pulled out a knife and threatened the girl at the counter, taking 130,000 yen (about $1,300) and fleeing the scene.

Using security footage, the police found and arrested the alleged robber on the 9th of this month, who admitted under questioning he wanted the money for motorcycle repairs.

One can only speculate on why the student chose a maid cafe. Was he preying on maids because of their projected weak and helpless image? Was he a frequent customer? Or did he just happen to be in Akihabara at the time?

Just goes to show there are jerks everywhere, even in wonderland Japan.
