Tsutomu Mizushima Reveals Air Combat Anime Series Kotobuki

Tsutomu Mizushima, the director behind Girls und Panzer and Shirobako, is back. He’s teaming up again with Shirobako writer Michiko Yokote for Koya no Kotobuki Hikotai, a just-announced series about a female fighter pilot squadron.

The series, whose name translates to Kotobuki: The Wasteland Squadron, will debut in January 2019.

Based on the trailer, also unveiled today, the series appears to be a look into the daily lives of the Kotobuki fighter squadron who, presumably, do their work in a wasteland of some kind.

The series is animated in a combination of 2D and CG at studio Gemba.

Pictured on the key visual for the series is Kirie, played by Sayumi Suzushiro, who is described as a natural pilot.

The plane seen in the trailer is called the Type-1 Hayabusa, and seems to be based on the Nakajima Ki-43 Hayabusa, which was used by Japan in World War II. According to Mizushima, the series will only feature Japanese planes.
