VIZ 2009 Releases Offer Up More Naoki Urasawa

Fans of the excellent thriller Monster will find a lot to look forward to next year, as two more series from creator Naoki Urasawa are topping VIZ Media’s 2009 release list. The titles in question are 20th Century Boys and Pluto: Urusawa X Tezuka, originally published beginning in 1999 and 2004, respectively. The extended titling of the latter illustrates its connection to Osamu Tezuka’s classic Tetsuwan Atom AKA Astro Boy, as it adopts one of the legendary robot’s storylines and explores a sinister robot-murder-mystery.

Both of the series in question are certainly no stranger to acclaim. Here’s a quote from the press release, straight from the mouth of good ol’ Alvin Lu: “In Japan, these two series are considered masterpieces of the form, along the lines of Katsuhiro Otomo’s AKIRA and Takehiko Inoue’s VAGABOND. With our other new releases for 2009, we’re extremely excited this season to be presenting some of the absolute best the manga medium has to offer.”

Other titles currently on VIZ’s slate include The Magic Touch, Otomen, Dogs, Ikigami: The Ultimate Limit, Honey Hunt, and the VIZBIG edition of Miki Aihara’s Hot Gimmick.
