venus wars

It’s been 30 years since The Venus Wars anime film opened in Japanese theaters, so it’s definitely time for the classic to get the remaster it deserves. The 1989 feature is coming back to shelves in Japan in a Blu-ray box set remastered in HD using a negative scan, and it’s up for pre-order now ahead of a July 26 release.

The box packs the movie with a 32-page booklet and a reprinted movie pamphlet, all in a box with a new illustration by director and manga creator Yoshikazu Yasuhiko. It’ll run fans ¥8,242 (about $76), and you can see a 10-minute preview of the remaster below.

Yasuhiko commented on the film, which was considered a critical and box office failure when it was first released:

“Thirty years ago, I was a loser. Because of the humiliation and the irritation to myself, I decided to seal this film … Now I want to apologize to the film and everyone, and I sincerely hope you watch this film pulled from the time capsule with the eyes of the contemporary age.”
