Anohana film to hit U.S. screens

Art thou a fan of Ano Hi Mita Hana no Namae o Bokutachi wa Mada Shiranai, or just someone curious as to what a show with such an unreasonably long title could possibly be about? Either way, we have some good news for you.

The 11-episode series, whose name can mercifully be shortened to Anohana, received a film adaptation last year, and that film is headed to American theaters in January courtesy Aniplex.

Anohana
, which originally premiered in 2011 on Fuji TV’s noitaminA block, is about a group of childhood friends who regroup to help grant the wish of their friend Menma, who died in an accident 10 years prior but reappears as a ghost. The movie version is a retelling of the series from Menma’s point of view with a new epilogue set one year after the end of the series.

Those who buy tickets to the U.S. screenings will receive replicas of the letters Menma writes in the film, plus real flower seeds, encouraging a bit of green thumbing from the otaku crowd.

Aniplex, you may recall, are also the folks responsible for releasing the Madoka Magica films theatrically in the U.S. Nice as home setups can be these days, there’s something special about seeing films theatrically, so good on Aniplex for bringing Japanese animation to theaters.
