Four Anime Films Submitted for Oscar ContentionThe 2020 Academy Award for Best Animated Feature: many want it, but only one will get it.

The first step, of course, is to get nominated. The battle for those five Oscar nomination slots is on, with some 32 features submitted for contention. This year, four of those 32 submissions are from Japan. The titles submitted are:

Weathering With You (Makoto Shinkai)
Promare (Hiroyuki Imaishi)
Children of the Sea (Ayumu Watanabe)
Okko’s Inn (Kitaro Kosaka)

The only anime film to win the award, which was established in 2001, was Hayao Miyazaki’s Spirited Away. The following anime films reached the nomination stage:

Howl’s Moving Castle (Hayao Miyazaki)
The Wind Rises (Hayao Miyazaki)
The Tale of Princess Kaguya (Isao Takahata)
When Marine Was There (Hiromasa Yonebayashi)
Mirai (Mamoru Hosoda)

We’ll find out if any anime films get nominated on January 13. The Oscars take place February 9.
