FUNimation Nabs the Rights to FLCL [UPDATED]

Now that everyone is calming down from the unexpected surge of live-action announcements out of FUNi’s camp this week, it’s time to get down to the real business at hand. In a move sure to make many folks out there very happy, FUNimation’s latest title acquisition is none other than Production I.G. and Gainax’s FLCL.

Directed by Kazuya Tsurumaki, FLCL should be required viewing for all anime fans. Released in Japan in 2000/2001, the six-episode OVA is incredibly energetic, sporting fantastic writing, animation, and, well, pretty much everything else.

According to the FUNimation Twitter, it’s unclear whether they’ll be using the old English dub or producing a new one. I just hope they keep the rad commentary tracks from the last release. FLCL will hit DVD and Blu-ray in late 2010.

Update: FUNimation confirmed that the dub used for FLCL will indeed be the Synch-Point dub, and fans did rejoice.
