Golden Boy Author Isn’t a Fan of One Piece

Golden Boy author Tetsuya Egawa isn’t one to mince words, as recently seen when he commented on the shortcomings of Makoto Shinkai’s hit anime film your name. He has some similarly cold feelings about Eiichiro Oda’s wildly popular One Piece manga, and he aired them out recently on Japanese radio show “Naitsu no Chaki Chaki Dauhousou.”

When comedy duo hosts Nobuyuki Hanawa and Nobuyuki Tsuchiya asked Egawa about his thoughts on One Piece, he had to ask back, “Are you trying to get me flamed again!?!” Egawa knows his controversial opinions will ruffle more than a few feathers, but he continued regardless.

On the topic of One Piece: “If you look at it with the eyes of a pro, you can see why it sells, but I personally don’t find it very entertaining.”

According to Egawa, the editors’ influence on the series is so apparent that it made it difficult for him to read, and made him feel as if he were trapped in a board meeting. He also adds that the end results are impossible to enjoy for those who know the behind-the-scenes work involved between the editors and artists of Weekly Shonen Jump

If it makes you feel any better, though, Egawa admitted that he only managed to make it through the first 7 volumes of the currently 83-volume saga.
