Kunihiko Ikuhara Series Sarazanmai Characters, Synopsis Revealed

SarazanmaiSarazanmai, the latest series from Kunihiko Ikuhara (Utena, Penguindrum) is set to hit the Noitamina programming block April 2019.

Now we’ve got some more details on the series, including character designs and a synopsis.

The series, an original work by Ikuhara, centers around a group of middle school students in Asakusa, Tokyo, who are transformed into the Japanese monsters known as kappa by a kappa named Keppi.

The students, played by Ayumu Murase, Koki Uchiyama and Shun Horie, are told that to return to their original form, they’ll have to retrieve the shirikodama of a zombie. A shirikodama is a mythical ball said to contain the soul located inside the anus. Yikes.

At the same time, something seems to be going on at a police box manned by two policemen played by Mamoru Miyano and Yoshimasa Hosoya.

Sarazanmai is animated at MAPPA and Lapin Track, with Nobuyuki Takeuchi directing alongside Ikuhara and Teruko Utsumi on scripts.
