That “Otaking” you see isn’t referring to Toshio Okada, co-founder of Gainax and author of Sayonara, Mr. Fatty, though this would certainly be news of a different scale if it were. Rather, this tale is about another bold man, Paul “Otaking” Johnson, and his noble quest to make a Doctor Who anime a reality all by himself.
The first rumblings of this came about earlier in the year, and this particular video showcases some of the methods Johnson has been using to bring his project to life. Now we have even more samples of what’s to come, with clips showing off the Daleks and the Cybermen as they scream “exterminate” and actually exterminate, respectively.
Whether or not anyone has issues with some of the personal stylistic choices in those clips (that mustachioed army man sure does have a fabulous way of commanding), it’s all pretty impressive for a one-man project. I especially dig what he’s done with the shimmering, old school-style mechanical aspects, like the Cybermen themselves. Hey, why don’t we just ring up Studio 4ºC and get cracking on an anthology already?
