Live-Action Akira is No Longer on Warner Bros. Release Slate

The history of the live-action Hollywood adaptation of Katsuhiro Otomo’s Akira has been a tumultuous one. Back in May, it seemed the closest to reality yet, with director Taika Waititi’s take on the material set for a May 21, 2021 premiere. Then script troubles forced it to be pushed back so it wouldn’t clash with Waititi’s work on Thor: Love and Thunder. And now? Well, it’s off the schedule completely.

While this doesn’t necessarily spell certain doom for the project, Akira was not among the recent slew of dates Warner Bros. nailed down for a bunch of its upcoming projects. Among these are movies like The Flash and The Matrix 4, the latter of which has taken over Akira‘s former premiere date.

Perhaps Akira is just so far in the future that there’s no need to mention it among the other titles coming out in the next couple of years. Hopefully we’ll learn more about its fate soon.
