Makoto Shinkai’s Weathering With You Licensed for 2020 US ReleaseConsidering his last movie was, y’know, the highest-grossing Japanese film of all time worldwide, it’s no surprise licensors are grabbing up the rights for Makoto Shinkai’s latest.

GKIDS, the folks behind US releases of films by Studio Ghibli, among others, have snapped up Weathering With You for a theatrical release Stateside.

The film will hit US theaters in early 2020, says GKIDS. Before that, it will have a screening or two (in Los Angeles, we suspect) to quality for awards like the Oscars.

The film is set for release in Japan July 19. Here’s how GKIDS describes it:

The summer of his high school freshman year, Hokoda runs away from his remote island home to Tokyo, and quickly finds himself pushed to his financial and personal limits. The weather is unusually gloomy and rainy every day, as if to suggest his future. He lives his days in isolation, but finally finds work as a writer for a mysterious occult magazine. Then one day, Hokoda meets Hina on a busy street corner. This bright and strong­willed girl possesses a strange and wonderful ability: the power to stop the rain and clear the sky…
