Mamoru Oshii’s Toonami Micro-Series Details Revealed

Are you a fan of the world of Mamoru Oshii (Ghost in the Shell, Sky Crawlers) but sometimes wish he’d cram all his visual and aural goodness into one tiny micro-package?

Your wish is Toonami’s command.

We’ve got some new deets on Oshii’s five-part, 25-minute endeavor for the Adult Swim programming block, so strap in.

The series (or micro-series, as it’s been dubbed) is called Sand Whale and Me, and is:

the story of a female paratrooper in the distant future who is stranded in a vast desert. With limited supply of food and water, her only hope is to catch a Sand Whale from a pack. If she can’t, her life may just hang in the balance.

The series, which premieres March 18, will be produced at Production I.G, the studio with which Oshii has a long and fruitful relationship, and will be a combination of live-action and CG, like many of Oshii’s films. And like many (almost all, really) of Oshii’s films, Sand Whale and Me will be scored by Kenji Kawai.

Other cast and crew include CG supervisor Atsuki Sato, costume designer Dango Takeda, and voice actors Hanako Saeki and Yoshikatsu Fujiki.

Toonami posted a video of Oshii and Sato talking about the project on their Facebook page.

Oshii directed an ID for Adult Swim earlier this year, and it’s entirely possible Sand Whale and Me will continue in the same bizarre and wonderful vein.
