Director Masaaki Yuasa (Devilman crybaby, Mind Game, Lu Over the Wall, and many more) has really been on a roll lately with back to back projects. His Kimi to Nami ni Noretara movie has yet to begin its theatrical run in Japan, but he already has his next lined up. This time it’s Inu-Oh, a musical anime film based on the historical novel by Hideo Furukawa.
Furukawa’s novel, Heike Monogatari: Inu-OH no Maki (Tales of the Heike: Chapter Inu-Oh), tells the tale of a noh player in the 14th century. Manga artist Taiyo Matsumoto—known for titles like Sunny, Tekkon Kinkreet, and Ping Pong, the latter of which Yuasa adapted into an anime in 2014—is handling original character designs for the movie, and Yuasa’s Science Saru is on animation production.
Inu-Oh is currently scheduled for release sometime in 2021.
Here’s the cover of the novel, which debuted in May of 2017.
