Parasyte Manga to Be Adapted into Two Live-Action Films

Hitoshi Iwaaki’s Parasyte manga—which ran in the pages of monthly magazine Gekkan Afternoon from 1990 to 1995 and remains popular in Japan—is getting not one, but two films. Now that New Line no longer holds the rights, Toho has stepped in to produce a two-part live-action adaptation, with Takashi Yamazaki (Returner, Space Battleship Yamato) lined up to direct.

The film follows the tale of a teenager named Shinichi Izumi, played here by Shota Sometani (Himizu), whose body is invaded by an alien parasite. Unlike many, the parasite takes over his hand instead of his brain, and he fights against others who are possessed by the alien hosts.

Production on the Parasyte films kicks off in January 2014. The first part is currently planned for theatrical release in December 2014, with part two to follow in 2015.
