As fans of horror manga know, “Parasyte” is not, in fact, a typo, but the title of a much-loved 90s manga by artist Hitoshi Iwaaki.
Though the original manga ended way back in 1995, it’s never been adapted for either the large or small screen – until now. It was announced this week that Parasyte will be adapted both into a pair of live-action films and a TV anime series. That’s a lot of Parasyte, man!
With a plot that echoes the sci-fi classic Invasion of the Body Snatchers, Parasyte is the story of a race of alien creatures that take over and inhabit human bodies. One of these creatures fails to completely take possession of a high school boy named Shinichi, instead forming a kind of symbiotic relationship with him, and together they fight to save humanity.
The live-action films, slated to premiere in 2014 and 2015, will star Shota Sometani (Himizu) and will be directed by Takashi Yamazaki, who has some experience adapting anime with the live-action Space Battleship Yamato back in 2010.
There’s not much information as yet about the anime series, except that it will, in fact, exist. So that’s, uh, something.
