GKIDS and Shout! Factory previously brought director Hayao Miyazaki and Studio Ghibli’s beloved Princess Mononoke to Blu-ray and DVD, but even those who already own it may want to dip in again thanks to the new Collector’s Edition release. Due out on May 14, this special limited edition package houses the movie in a deluxe disc portfolio with a hardcover outer slipcase and an inner disc booklet that makes it look like it’s part of a gorgeous collection of storybooks.
The CD-dimension packaging would be enough to make it an attractive fixture, but the contents are the true star of this set. In addition to the discs themselves, the Princess Mononoke Collector’s Edition release comes with a 40-page book full of artwork and essays on the production and final film, serving as a nice complement to the on-disc special features.
This set also marks the first time for Joe Hisaishi’s amazing soundtrack to be made available on CD in North America, rounding out the box along with the film’s Blu-ray. We’ll be following up with a review of the movie itself, but for now consider the package alone recommended for fans of Studio Ghibli and the work of Miyazaki, as well as animation enthusiasts as a whole.
The Princess Mononoke Collector’s Edition Blu-ray set is currently up for pre-order on ghiblicollection.com.
