Researcher Determines How Much of Erotic Manga Sex is Consensual

erotic manga

What happens when a professional statistician runs the numbers on consent in manga sex? Visitors to the annual Niconico Chokaigi event found out the answer for themselves, at least if they happened to attend a panel held by researcher Midori Makita.

Known as @midrill on Twitter, Makita decided to find out how often the sex in erotic manga magazines was consensual. To break this down, Makita focused on a variety of manga magazines with relevant content, from Angel Club to Magnum X. While the amount of language-based nuance the study allowed for is debatable, it’s interesting to see each magazine broken down by percentage of forced versus consensual sex.

Here’s how each of the 19 magazines looks at a glance from the study, with the forced percentage on the left and the consensual percentage on the right.

Angel Club: 76% | 24%
Comic Kuriberon: 50% | 38%
Magazine Siberia: 44% | 56%
Comic Yumutensei: 31% | 69%
Comic Taka: 21/% | 79%
Men’s Gold: 21% | 79%
Comic X-Eros: 17% | 83%
Comic Ansurium: 17% | 83%
Comic Aun: 13% | 81%
Comic Europa: 11% | 89%
Web Maga Bangaichi: 10% | 90%
Comic ExE: 10% | 86%
Comic Kairakuten: 10% | 86%
Penguin Club: 8% | 83%
Action Pizatsu: 8% | 92%
Comic Naman: 6% | 94%
Comic Lo: 5% | 90%
Comic Bavel: 5% | 95%
Magnum X: 0% | 100%

A look at the study via Twitter user @hiroko_TB:

That brings the average total to 19 percent forced and 79 percent consensual. Do the numbers line up perfectly? Not really. To truly discover how accurate they are, one would need to sit down and read the stories for themselves. As @hiroko_TB put it, though, “Erotic manga has a lot of consensual sex.” That’s definitely a direct way to sum up this bizarrely specific study.
