Saudi Arabia and Japan Tease Anime Film Co-Production at Cannes

the journey

The Journey is a unique anime film, primarily due to the fact that it’s a co-production between Japan’s Toei Animation and Saudi Arabia’s animation and game development company Manga Productions. This one marks the pair’s second collaboration after last year’s The Woodcutter’s Treasure, and a minute-long teaser premiered at this past weekend’s 72nd Cannes Film Festival.

Inspired by the history and culture of ancient Arabia, The Journey has Godzilla Monster Planet director Koubun Shizuno at the helm. Atsuhiro Tomioka (Inazuma Eleven, Pokémon) handles the screenplay, Tatsuro Iwamoto (Ace Attorney) is on character designs, and Kaoru Wada (D.Gray-man, Inuyasha) provides the soundtrack.

Over 330 staff members have been working on the project, which should take about two years and three months to complete in total. As of right now, a 2020 release is planned for Japan, Saudi Arabia, and the rest of the world.
