Shibuya’s Halloween Drinking Ban Passes

drinking ban

Last month we posted about Shibuya aiming to crack down on alcohol during the upcoming Halloween festivities. At the time, the proposed ban on public drinking was just that, but as of today the bill has officially passed.

According to an update from Nippon News 24, the ban on public drinking covers both Halloween and New Year’s Eve. Drinking in parks, streets, and other public areas around Shibuya station will not be allowed, and the same applies to the use of loud audio equipment and the climbing of street lights.

Shibuya officials hope this will lead to fewer issues like the arrests from last year, in which 10 men—including a mix of Japanese citizens and those from outside of the country—overturned a truck while celebrating.
