Trailer Offers Look at Makoto Shinkai’s Next Anime Film

Makoto Shinkai (5 Centimeters Per Second, The Place Promised in Our Early Days) has a new film premiering in Japan on May 31, and a trailer popped up earlier this evening, offering the first look at his next project.

The Garden of Words (Kotonoha no Niwa) is billed as a “spectacle of visual literature for the digital age,” and tells a “story of ‘sad loneliness’ older than ‘love’.”

A brief synopsis:

We met, for each of us to start off.

Takao was skipping high school, sketching shoes in a Japanese garden, trying to become a shoemaker, when he encounters a mysterious woman, Yukino. Without arranging it they end up meeting again and again, only on rainy days, deepening their relationship and opening up to each other. But the end of the rainy season soon approaches…

Makoto Shinkai directs, with Kenichi Tsuchiya (Sword of the Stranger) as animation director and character designer, Hiroshi Takiguchi (009 Re: Cyborg) as art director, and Daisuke Kashiwa on music. Miyu Irino (Sora in Kingdom Hearts) and Kana Hanazawa (Kuroneko in Oreimo) voice the leads.
