Vertical’s Next Big Manga Title is Osamu Tezuka’s Ayako

Now we can finally stop speculating about Ed Chavez’s hint-hint tweets regarding the next big title from Vertical. We knew it would be Tezuka, and that it would come in at around 700 pages in length, but now we know the actual title in question: Ayako.

Ayako is a drama centered on post-war Japan. The eponymous child witnesses her older brother washing blood from his shirt, a stain that came about as a result of his involvement in the assassination of the head of the leftist party’s local Yodoyama chapter. The aftermath of the incident leaves the other witness, Oryo, dead while Ayako is shut away in a storehouse. Jiro flees, but Ayako remains trapped for twenty years.

When she finally emerges a full-grown, beautiful woman with her innocence intact, she finds the world around her to be anything but.

The story ran in Shogakukan’s Big Comic from 1972-1973; sounds like another interesting and unconventional tale from the master. Though the street date on Amazon may be subject to change, the 704-page manga is currently listed for release on October 19, 2010.
