GKIDS has another hit on its hands with the North American release of Makoto Shinkai’s Weathering With You. According to the numbers from Box Office Mojo, Shinkai’s latest made $3 million in just the first two days of fan screenings, and the feature is estimated to pull in $5.05 million over the course of its first six days.
That figure would put Weathering With You just above Shinkai’s previous film, Your Name., which made $5.017 million during its full North American theatrical run.
Weathering With You played a limited number of screens—486 in total across North America—so it didn’t manage to crack the top 10. Still, this impressive debut has made it the highest-grossing movie from GKIDS, doubling what Hiromasa Yonebayashi’s Mary and the Witch’s Flower managed to pull in back in 2018.
The worldwide box office total for Weathering With You currently stands at $182 million.
