Wonder Momo Returns with Web Anime, Game, and More

If you go way back to the arcade days you might recall Wonder Momo, a beat ’em up that originally hit arcades in 1987. Well, Namco Bandai is mining those memories and whipping up a multimedia storm that includes a new game, apparel, a hardcover graphic novel, and a five-episode web anime.

The anime will be comprised of five five-minute episodes, each of which will stream via Crunchyroll on Thursdays. The series is being animated by Graphinica (Hellsing Ultimate), with direction by Rainbow Samurai‘s Yutaka Kagawa and a script by Ayumi Inabe. The original story it’s based on comes from Erik Ko and Jim Zub.

Synopsis:

One day, a group of aliens planning to take over the Earth invade Tokyo. Momoko, who aspires to be an idol, gets involved in the fight in an unexpected form. Warudemon, king of the alien empire, uses various tactics to hunt down Momoko and the people around her. Momoko has decided to stand up to the Warudemon plain and simple.

The title role of Momoko/Wonder Momo will be played by Yuka Fujiwara, with Misaki Komatsu playing Akiho/Amazona. The pair of relative newcomers will also be performing some of the theme songs for the game and anime as the duo FUJIKOMATUNE.

As for the game, it’s in development at WayForward (Double Dragon: Neon, Ducktales Remastered). The 2012 Shiftylook webcomic that first brought Wonder Momo back into our lives is being collected in the aforementioned graphic novel, which Udon plans to publish in April.
